Danube Delta – the youngest land in Europe - perhaps the least inhabited region of temperate Europe is the second largest (after Volga Delta) and the best preserved delta on the continent. Human meddling has irrevocably changed it, but it still is a very favourable place for the development of highly diverse flora and fauna with numerous rare species: over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes (more than 25 types of natural ecosystems).

I have been thinking a lot before writing this, and I would have loved to agree, to add to its reputation of remote villages steeped in customs and history.  We used to joke that nothing has changed here in the last hundred of years. Not anymore. Today it is a land of contrasts, a combination of modern and traditional, a mix of novel and primitive.

It’s said to be “one of the last places where rural European medieval life remains intact”. Famous for its traditional wooden churches, ornate wooden gateways and timeless villages, Maramures is an ideal location for alpine walking, hiking, climbing, skiing, caving, paragliding and kayaking. Stunning local pastoral landscapes and picturesque villages offer photographers and artists some wonderful opportunities.
