Lying in the grass, eyes closed… The scent of freshly cut hay penetrates my mind like a powerful drug and, together with the warming sun, invites me to smile. What should I answer to the countless bugs which keep declaring me their love or aversion? This dilemma really gets me exhausted – enough with the dreaming, I’m opening my eyes…
In my sight, lays the majestic ridge of Bucegi Mountains. The green foothills forests contrasts with the snow still covering some of the summits, the highest being over 2500m. The dark blue sky, hosting a bunch of wooly clouds completes the chromatic display.
Two days ago, I was stepping on the path, on the same ridge which I now see on the horizon. The images of the sheep herds which we’ve passed on our way and of the shepherds seemingly coming from another reality are so vivid in my memory…
Any effort of the climb was instantly forgotten at seeing the view from the top; once the summit is reached is truly worth it all. We had descended from the conquered high mountaintops on a spectacular glacier valley, near a sheepfold where we tasted the freshest cheese ever. Next, we arrived in a village host to one of the most imposing castles in Transylvania, Bran. The legend says Bran was home to Vlad the Impaler, the cruel warlord that inspired Bram Stoker in writing his famous “Dracula”. After visiting this XIV century architectural masterpiece (guides are available to enthrall with tales of local legends and stories - another great opportunity to really get the taste of the Romanian countryside) we started a steep ascend towards the village, where I am now, writing these words.
The path led us, through forests and meadows where we ate all kinds of berries, to a grassy ridge from where we could perfectly see the village Magura. “A piece of heaven” - announces an undated cross, next to a saying which praises hospitality. It is here where we are going to sleep, in a house of a simple man who still keeps the old customs. (“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”). Nowhere have I felt better! It was so quiet… and in the group led by the Romanian guides were some of my best friends. Truly, “a piece of heaven.”
